As the Thursday prior to the primary, after Iowa, the two most recent polls give Trump a 14 point lead over Haley. Who turns out, and the role of “undeclared” voters seems key. Haley received a big lift when she won what we called The Sununu Primary. This was the coveted endorsement of the Granite State’s affable, anti-Trump GOP governor. But does it matter/ Voters here are famously contrarian. They may like Sununu fine, but may not listen to him anymore than they did the even more popular John Lynch. The ex governor supported Biden in the 2020 primary. Sununu supported then State Senate President Chuck Morse for the GOP nod to take on US Senator Maggie Hassan in 2022. The primary was won by General Don Bolduc, making his second try, and perceived as more hard line than Morse (to the point where Trump himself was cagey). Hassan won with surprising ease. Nikki Haley stumped hard for General Bolduc, and he is supporting Haley now, with Sununu. Morse, on the other hand, has endorsed Trump. Morse’s play is an effort to revive his underdog bid for the GOP gubernatorial nod this year. The front runner is Kelly Ayotte, the one time VP short lister who lost her senate seat to Hassen in 2016 after trying to have it both ways about Trump. How is that for a bag of snakes?
