Nikki Haley will withdraw from the presidential race today, coming to terms with MAGA extremist and isolationist domination of the Republican party. Her feisty but futile challenge to former President Trump saw its high water mark in the Granite State FITN primary January 23rd, aided by the Governor, and the ability of voters not registered in either major party to vote in the GOP primary. A similar ability characterized the primary in her home state of South Carolina, where she was twice elected governor, but drew only 40% of the vote. Over the weekend, she won the GOP primary in heavily Democratic District of Columbia by almost 2-1, but in a turnout of less than 2000 voters, a number more typical of a Concord city council race. In Nevada she trailed a “none of the above” ballot option. More than a dozen states voted yesterday. Haley won only in the People’s Republic of Vermont, by just 4 points. She lost Massachusetts 3-2, and every other state by margins varying from 2-1 to 4–1. Trump, facing 91 criminal charges, maintains an unprecedented hold on his party, signaling a historic change. He is poised to face a moderately successful president dogged by concerns about his age, in a country more divided than any time since the 1960s, or perhaps the 1860s, with the world more on fire than any time since the 1930s.
